Moving to Statia!

Isn't it amazing how things in life just seem to work out? A month ago we were busy applying to every dental school in the US thinking we would be stuck in Southern Alberta until at least September 2012. Now we are frantically preparing to go to medical school in September on a little Caribbean Island called Sint Eustatius (Statia for short).

Joel has always been back and forth between medicine and dentistry but in the last couple years decided to go with dentistry. He choose dentistry because he is very good with his hands and he loved the prospective lifestyle of a dentist. I think he didn't look into medicine more because he didn't want to take the MCAT. Well two weeks ago we were out at Joel's parents' when his dad mentioned in passing that someone he knew was at this Caribbean school and thought that you didn't have to write the MCAT. Joel was already on the computer so he googled it right then. We researched it and decided that even though Joel's dental applications were well under way, there was no harm in applying. We especially loved that we would be moving THIS September! Since that day, we've both been thinking long and hard (again) about what a life in medicine would be like. We've come to the conclusion that it is the right thing for us and we're SUPER excited about it!
It's just interesting to think that had we not gone out to Magrath to Joel's parents' on that particular day, (and we almost didn't) we almost definitely wouldn't be headed down the life path that we're on right now. It's crazy how such a small event has altered our entire future, and we couldn't be happier about it.
